Encompassing embroidery and paper cutting to photography and film installation, five artists have been selected for this year’s Jerwood Makers Open, demonstrating the new topology of applied arts.

Maisie Broadhead, Linda Brothwell, Adam Buick, Nahoiko Kojima and Roanna Wells have each been awarded a commission of £7,500 to develop new ideas central to their individual practice which, when completed, will be presented in a touring exhibition starting at JVA at Jerwood Space, London in July 2013.

From more than 200 UK-wide applications, the winning artists were chosen by a panel comprising internationally acclaimed designer Edward Barber, Director of Stanley Picker Gallery David Falkner, and artist and editor Bonnie Kemske.

Shonagh Manson, Director of the Jerwood Charitable Foundation said: “What unites these five commissions is an equal weight and consideration given by each artist to both their conceptual enquiry and to the skill of execution required to work at this level with specific materials and form.”

The exhibition will open at JVA at Jerwood Space, London, from 10 July to 25 August 2013, before touring the UK. More information can be found at www.jerwoodvisualarts.org
