The Harley Foundation has announced textile artist Louise Presley as the recipient of its inaugural £5,000 Studio Award.
The Foundation provides 25 workspaces for artists and makers at the Welbeck Estate in rural Nottinghamshire, and also funds The Harley Gallery which, alongside its contemporary exhibitions programme, is home to the Portland Collection of fine and decorative art. The Harley Studio Award was set up to reward the work and dedication of the studio artists based there.
Presley, who makes one-off, new-from-old textile pieces under the label name Hope and Elvis, says she will use the award to fund additional staffing for the workshop business that she runs alongside her creative practice. She explained:
“Over the last eight years I have worked hard to establish a creative practice and series of public workshops. In order to significantly move forward I needed to take time out to develop a body of work that will self-generate into a broader vision.
“The award is pivotal to this becoming reality, as I need funds to assist with extra support for me to dedicate time away from the business. The Harley Studio Award will give me a springboard back to creativity and allow me to put back in what I have been giving out.”
