Istanbul Biennial: Mom, Am I A Barbarian?, 14 September-10 November, Istanbul, Turkey
The 13th Istanbul Biennial, curated by Fulya Erdemci, has had a troubled gestation as the city has gone through political and social unrest in recent months. Plans to use Taksim Square and Gezi Park have been scrapped and there have been protests over its sponsors, Koç Holding. In light of the recent unrest in the city, the theme of ‘publicness’ is timely – as is an attempt to challenge the dominence of European art by prioritising work from Latin America, North Africa, the Middle East and Turkey. And, for the first time, the biennial is free to view.
