Jeremy Deller has created a digital artwork as part of 14-18 NOW, the cultural programme marking the centenary of the First World War.
LIGHTS OUT: Jeremy Deller, co-commissioned by 14-18 NOW and The Space, is a free, downloadable app that will reveal a new short film by the artist each day from 1-4 August. The final film will be released at 10pm on 4 August to coincide with the UK-wide LIGHTS OUT event, an invitation for everyone to turn off their lights for an hour from 10-11pm, leaving on only a single light or candle to remember the moment of the outbreak of World War 1. At 11pm that night all four of Deller’s films will disappear.
Other artworks created for LIGHTS OUT include: a video projection across Edinburgh’s Scottish National Gallery by Mumbai artist Nalini Malani; a light and sound installation by Bedwyr Williams at the site of the WW1 North Wales Memorial Arch in Bangor; and a large-scale candle installation created by Bob and Roberta Smith with community groups in Belfast. Across London an additional project will be revealed on the night of 4 August.
Ruth Mackenzie is launch director at The Space: “Deller has created beautiful new digital war art, a 21st century response to the 14-18 war, which finds a new artistic vocabulary to help us think, pity, wonder.”
