The winner of the fifth edition of the Marmite Prize for Painting has been announced as London-based artist Jessie Makinson.
The Edinburgh College of Art graduate, who has also attended The Royal Drawing School’s postgraduate Drawing Year course, creates works that explore femininity and cultural appropriation.
Receiving the prize for her oil painting So Handy, Makinson said: “I was very surprised and flattered to win the Marmite Prize. It’s great to be involved in a show with so many brilliant painters. The whole application process has been refreshingly simple, and it’s nice to see the care and consideration taken to organise the show.”
Makinson wins a specially commissioned tin and mahogany artwork, Retread, made and donated by artist Alison Wilding RA. Two runners-up prizes were awarded to Emma Cousin and Sheila Rennick.
In addition, the winner of the student prize has been announced as Royal College of Art student Anthony Banks. He receives a four week residency at Bon Volks, Margate, plus free accomodation and a £500 fee towards travel and expenses.
The exhibition was selected by a judging panel assembled through an open call earlier this year. The panel included last year’s winner Brian Cheeswright, along with painters Phillip Allen, Vanessa Jackson and Mark O’Kelly.
The Marmite Prize for Painting was set up in 2006 with the aim to promote artist communities and networks by connecting artists through a touring exhibition and related activities. Past winners have included Iain Andrews, Michele Fletcher and Dai Roberts.
The 2016 Marmite Painting Prize exhibition continues at Block 336, London until 1 July. The show will then tour to Highlanes Gallery, Drogheda, Ireland, from 8 July – 10 September. www.marmiteprize.org
