The visual arts category of the South Bank Sky Arts Awards has been awarded to Katie Paterson at a ceremony hosted by Melyvn Bragg of The South Bank Show.

Paterson won the award for her solo 2013 show at Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge and her part in the group show, Tipping Point, at Wolverhampton Art Gallery.

The awards are in their 17th year and fourth year in association with Sky Arts. They recognise achievement across the arts, including pop music (Artic Monkeys, AM), theatre (Let The Right One In, National Theatre of Scotland) and film (Clio Barnard for The Selfish Giant).

Meanwhile, Tracey Emin was recognised with The Outstanding Achievement Award. Receiving her award, which this year has been designed by Sir Peter Blake, Emin said: “Art is our new religion and we have to fight for it.”
