Brigitte Jurack, Tabitha Jussa and Jason Thompson have been shortlisted for the Liverpool Art Prize 2014. They were chosen from 53 artists submitted following an open nomination process. The prize is for artists who are based or were born in the Liverpool City Region, and the shortlisting process considers the impact they have made locally, nationally and internationally.
Wirral-based Brigitte Jurack, a founder member of artists’ collective Foreign Investment, has been shortlisted for her sculptures and installations that explore memories of place and time. The socio-political photographic work and recent large-scale compositions by Tabitha Jussa also unanimously impressed the selection panel. Jason Thompson was selected for his vibrant paintings that take inspiration from the repetitive patterns of mechanical, botanical and anatomical diagrams.
This year’s selectors and prize judges are: Manchester-based artist and lecturer Pavel Büchler; Artistic Director of Tate Liverpool, Francesco Manacorda; and new media artist and Associate Curator at Metal, Simon Poulter.
The exhibition of shortlisted work will open in Liverpool in May with the winner announced at an awards ceremony in June. The winning artist will receive a £2000 prize and be invited to present a solo show at the Bluecoat in the gallery’s Vide space in 2015. There is also a People’s Choice award of £1000, which is selected by public vote.
Jenny Porter, curator of the Liverpool Art Prize and Project Manager at Metal, said: “The Liverpool Art Prize continues to celebrate the talent and creativity of the city and it’s always a pleasure to acknowledge the hard work of artists who may not always be known by people who live and work here.”
