The annual London Art Book Fair, now in its fifth year, has become an essential meeting place for lovers of art books. Free to enter, it brings together a large and eclectic group of art publishers, ranging from large publishing houses to smaller, independent imprints and individual artists. Among the many exhibitors are Black Dog Publishing, GOST Books, Phaidon Press, Riflemaker and Trolley Books.

Hosted by the Whitechapel Gallery, the event includes an extended programme of film screenings, conversations, and talks by leading authors and high-profile artists such as Cornelia Parker, Tacita Dean and Luc Tuymans. There will also be readings and a children’s workshop with graphic artist and illustrator Otto.

Other highlights include The Artists’ Books Weekend, taking place at the Mews Project Space. This will be showcasing a project by artists Sara MacKillop and Andreas Schmidt, who are offering ‘busy, transatlantic book collectors’ one hour each to browse the tables via Skype – a snip at $200 per session.

There will also be the Book Live! discussion, which sets out to address the urgent concerns of how the book can keep up with digital culture through new modes of production, dissemination and reading.

The London Art Book Fair 2013 opens on 12 September (6-9pm) and runs to 15 September (11am-6pm). For more information visit whitechapelgallery.org
