Ruth Ewan, Ana Genovés, Emma Hart, Tania Kovats and Phoebe Unwin are the five artists shortlisted for the sixth edition of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women.
The biennial award was founded in 2005, as a collaboration between the Whitechapel Gallery and Max Mara fashion group, to support UK-based female artists who are yet to have a major survey solo exhibition.
The winner, to be announced early in 2016, will be awarded a six-month residency in Italy and solo show at the Whitechapel Gallery and Collezione Maramotti in Italy on the strength of their proposal for a new body of work.
Each of the five nominees will present their ideas to a judging panel comprised of director of the Whitechapel Gallery, Iwona Blazwick; director of Edinburgh’s the Fruitmarket Gallery, Fiona Bradley; Launch Pad’s Sarah Elson; Art Review senior editor, Helen Sumpter; and artist Alison Wilding.
This year’s award sees a wide variety of practices from film and video to photography, sculptural-installations and painting. Previous recipients of the award include Corin Sworn (2013-2015), Laure Prouvost (2011-2013), Andrea Büttner (2009-2011), Hannah Rickards (2007-2009) and Margaret Salmon (2005-2007).
