Always something moves: Sophie Lee with SHE Choir
Artist Sophie Lee collaborates with Manchester-based SHE Choir in this new performance presented by Mark Devereux Projects. Lee has written and produced a new song combining words and phrases from forgotten books, which will be performed across various spaces within Manchester Central Library. The piece is part of Lee’s touring project ‘Always something moves’ which includes video, text and photographic works that consider the connection between landscape and memory. Her solo exhibition takes place at Bankley Gallery from 21-29 February 2020.

Narbi Price, The Ashington Paintings Redux
First shown at Woodhorn Museum in 2018, this major new body of paintings by Narbi Price was made in response to works by The Ashington Group, also known as the Pitmen Painters. Founded in 1934 this group of miners produced hundreds of paintings depicting everyday life in their Northumberland mining communities. Price’s paintings take influence from their working methods and reflect on post-industrial Ashington, whose landscape is vastly changed from that known to the Ashington Group, and since the last pit closed in the late 1980s, a place now divorced from its former status as a major mining town.
Until 31 January 2020, The XL Gallery, Fine Art Department, Newcastle University, King Edward VII Building, King’s Walk, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 7RU. www.a-n.co.uk/events/narbi-price-the-ashington-paintings-redux/
Three Acts and Seven Scenes
This solo exhibition at Salisbury Arts Centre by Cornwall-based artist Nicola Bealing responds to Federico García Lorca’s play Blood Wedding, a tragedy that reflected the political turmoil of 1930s Spain. Bealing’s narrative-based paintings and prints suggest modern-day fables, exploring ‘absurd human behavioural patterns’, with darkness and light, wind, sky and water, eyes and teeth, long roads, high mountains and birds in forests among the recurring themes and images in her work.
27 January – 28 March 2020, Salisbury Arts Centre, Bedwin Street, Salisbury, SP1 3UT. www.a-n.co.uk/events/three-acts-and-seven-scenes/
The Ocean’s Skin with Philip Hoare
Philip Hoare, writer of Leviathan or, The Whale and The Sea Inside is obsessed with the sea. Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick, called it ‘the ocean’s skin’ and in this talk of the same name, Hoare draws on his new book, RISINGTIDEFALLINGSTAR, which looks at the way humans relate to the sea’s natural history – its whales, birds, tides and myths. The talk takes place at God’s House Tower, a new arts and heritage venue in Southampton’s old town, which has recently opened to the public following major refurbishment of its medieval building.
13 February 2020. God’s House Tower, Town Quay, Road, Southampton SO14 2NY. www.a-n.co.uk/events/the-oceans-skin-with-philip-hoare/
