Paul Hobson, director of Contemporary Art Society, has been announced as the new director of Modern Art Oxford.

Making the announcement, David Isaac, Chair of the Modern Art Oxford Trustees, said: “Paul is an excellent choice to lead Modern Art Oxford in this important phase of its history. The trustees and staff are thrilled with his appointment and are poised to work with him to shape the future of the gallery, and to ensure it continues to make a vital contribution to the development and understanding of contemporary art.”

Hobson, who has been director of Contemporary Art Society since 2007, will take up the position at Modern Art Oxford in September. He said: “I am delighted to have been appointed to lead Modern Art Oxford, especially as we approach our 50th anniversary in 2015. I look forward to working with the Board and the team to build on the gallery’s reputation for ambitious, bold and internationally acclaimed programmes that support artistic excellence to bring contemporary art to the widest audience, whilst ensuring the gallery’s robust and sustainable future.”

Previous Modern Art Oxford director Michael Stanley died last year. The Michael Stanley Fund for New Art was set up in his memory, providing an opportunity for individuals and organisations to support a programme of new commissions in the lead up to the gallery’s 50th anniversary.
