Middlesbrough-based arts organisation Navigator North, formed in 2010 to initiate and promote opportunities for visual artists, has announced eight artists who will be getting a share of its small grants seed fund.

Roberto Picciau, Sara Cooper, Scott Marks, Callum Whitely, Daniel Slater, Becki Harper + Paul Murray and Sophie McIntosh have each been awarded funding to explore the theme of work and play. The fund, which has been enabled through support from Arts Council England, The Seedbed Trust, East Street Arts and mima Visual Art Network, is intended as a catalyst for the artists to develop new projects or enhance their skills.

Vicky Holbrough, Co-Director of Navigator North, said:“We hope these awards will be used to kick-start some really interesting visual arts projects across Tees Valley over the next six months and also increase the skills and experience of a number of Tees Valley artists.”

The projects being supported include: subsidised studios for Roberto Picciau and Scott Marks; Sara Cooper’s artist’s residency at Middlesbrough Dorman Museum; new installation work by Callum Whitely; and participatory workshop-led projects by Becki Harper + Paul Murray.

Alongside the small grants, which range from £100 to £1000 per artist, the eight successful applicants will receive a tailored programme of support. These professional development workshops and talks will also be open to any artist based in Tees Valley.
