We Are More – Act for Culture in Europe, a Europe-wide campaign for the arts and culture, is urging all interested parties to sign its online petition calling on national leaders to “demonstrate political vision and courage” at the extraordinary EU summit on 22-23 November. During the summit, national leaders will meet to debate the next EU budget 2014-2020.
Launched in October 2010, We Are More – Act for Culture in Europe promotes culture, heritage and the arts, together with education, social cohesion and environmental sustainability, as key areas in which the EU has to make more bold investments if it is to reach its growth objectives and Europe is to remain a thriving democracy in the future.
The campaign has prepared an online letter asking heads of state and governments to “show the sound leadership required to ensure that the next EU budget meets the massive challenges we all face”.
The statement goes on to say: “Culture, education and the arts, citizens’ participation, equality and freedom for all, democracy and the rule of law, balanced regional development, environmental protection and social justice are the necessary foundations on which to build a sustainable Europe and to recover from the current crisis. They are investments in our common future and must be protected from financial cuts.”
