Angus McEwan has received the bronze award in the Shenzhen Watercolour Biennial 2013-2014. He is the only British finalist from an exhibition shortlist of 237 paintings and 2825 entries.
The Scottish painter who works in a variety of media, creates predominantly watercolour paintings based on his travels. Known for his paintings of China, McEwan’s Slipping into the Shadows was singled out for a mention by British juror Andy Wood.
Wood, who holds the position of Honorary Secretary of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, was one of two British artists, including Thomas Plunkett, President of the Royal Watercolour Society, who were appointed to the Biennial’s international panel of jurors. The jury featured representatives from the Committee of China Artists (CCA), the Artistic Director of Shenzhen Art Museum, and the Australian and American watercolourists David Taylor and John T. Salminen.
Positioned as an academic exhibition, Shenzhen Watercolour Biennial has been initiated and supported by the Chinese Government through multiple partners including Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
“Winning the Shenzhen watercolour competition has been an exciting experience,” said McEwan. “The quality of work on show by some of the world’s best watercolourists meant the competition was extremely high. I am honoured to be part of this international event.”
An exhibition of 250 works, including pieces by the jurors, will take place at Shenzhen Art Museum from 10 December to 10 January 2014. The show will then travel to eight cities throughout China during 2014.
