This Sunday sees the coming together of some of the most high-profile names in contemporary art and digital culture for a day-long event at London’s Barbican Centre.
Seven on Seven pairs seven artists with seven technologists, who will rise to the challenge of developing something new over the course of the day. They will reveal their ideas for the first time during the event.
The artists taking part in the conference include the Berlin-based Glasgow artist and 2010 Turner Prize winner Susan Philipsz (paired with Naveen Selvadurai, creator of Foursquare), 2011 Silver Lion winner Haroon Mirza (paired with Ryder Ripps, Creative Director of New York technology-driven creative agency OKFocus), and 2008 Turner Prize winner Mark Leckey (paired with software developer Daniel Williams).
Other artists and technologists taking part are: Jonas Lund (with Michelle You, Songkick), Graham Harwood (with Alberto Nardelli, Tweetminster), Alexsandra Domanovic (with Smari McCarthy, Interntional Modern Media Institute), and Cecile B. Evans (with Alice Bartlett, Berg).
The event is organised by New York’s Rhizome organisation, which describes itself as ‘dedicated to the creation, presentation, preservation, and critique of emerging artistic practices that engage technology’. Founded in 1996 by artist Mark Tribe, Rhizome is committed to supporting artists ‘working at the furthest reaches of technological experimentation as well as those responding to the broader aesthetic and political implications of new tools and media.’
Rhizome has been hosting an annual Seven on Seven conference in New York since 2010. The Barbican event is a new departure and the first time it has taken place outside the USA.
