A one-day symposium at Hoxton’s Standpoint Gallery and Shoreditch Town Hall on 23 June will bring together artists, students and arts professionals to consider professional development and support structures for artists. Mapping Art Practice in the UK will present a programme of panel debates, open studios, film screenings and networking that will be delivered through three panel discussions: London versus the UK artworld, ART-DIY, and Network Worth.
Panellists on the day include co-author of Rebalancing Our Cultural Capital, David Powell, Cheryl Jones of artist-led gallery and studios Grand Union, Enclave / Temporary Contemporary‘s Anthony Gross, Workplace Gallery‘s Paul Moss, and a-n and AIR’s Pippa Koszerek.
The impetus for the symposium stems from Standpoint Gallery’s Standpoint Futures – a residency programme that invites artists based outside London to develop their practice in the capital. The day will start informally at Standpoint Gallery with open studio visits and will include a screening of Glossolalia, the new film installation by former Standpoint Futures resident Tom Varley. There will also be a networking lunch.
The symposium moves to Shoreditch Town Hall for the panel discussions, which will consider the current climate for artists in London and the rest of the UK. The first discussion, London versus the UK artworld, invites Powell, Jones, Ellen De Wachter (Contemporary Art Society), Seventeen Gallery’s David Hoyland and artist Laura Reeves to consider how conditions differ for regional and London-based artists.
The second discussion, ART-DIY, invites panellists to explore how artist-focussed organisations and DIY artist-led projects enhance the artistic ecosystem. Dr Megan Wakefield’s PhD research on artist-led peer learning will contextualise discussions from Gross, Mary Vettise of the newly formed Artists Union England and Castlefield Gallery’s Kwong Lee. Koszerek will present the advocacy and campaign work that AIR, a-n’s advisory body on artists representation, is delivering around the issue of paying artists.
The day will close with a look at how artists can navigate the art world’s institutions. NETWORK WORTH will see Moss, artist Anthony Schrag, Artquest’s Russell Martin, The Cornwall Workshop‘s Teresa Gleadowe and artist and academic David Cross weigh up the benefits and constraints of working within particular establishment frameworks.
Mapping Art Practice in the UK takes place on Monday 23 June, 11.30am – 5.30pm. Tickets are available throughEventbrite:MAP Tickets
