AIR members Debbie Locke, Paula MacArthur, Jo Taylor and Nigel Massey feature among a shortlist of 46 artists selected for The open west 2013. The open submission competition was established in 2007 by artist and curator Lyn Cluer Coleman and curator Sarah Goodwin. It was set up to provide an opportunity for UK and international artists to exhibit their work to new audiences in South West England.
This year’s show will take place in two distinctive venues and includes artists from Canada, USA, Japan and Denmark, as well the UK. Four prizes of £500 will be announced at the preview. The exhibition will open in July at the National Trust’s Newark Park, a Tudor hunting lodge in the Gloucestershire countryside, where works will be displayed amongst the existing collections of the sixteenth century house.
It will then tour to Cheltenham Art Gallery + Museum in October and form part of the gallery’s opening programme following a significant new build and redevelopment – the gallery is known for it important Arts & Crafts collection.
Both shows will be curated by Cluer Coleman and Goodwin, who also drew up the shortlist along with guest selectors Dr Justin Marshall and Emma Critchleya. A full list of exhibiting artists can be found at www.theopenwest.org.uk.
