This year’s Threadneedle Art Prize for figurative and representational art has been won by Berkshire-based artist Tina Jenkins, chosen from a shortlist of six artists. She receives prize money of £20,000 and a one-week solo exhibition in 2015.
On receiving the award, Jenkins said: “I’m in shock and thrilled. Winning this important prize is a dream, to be able to put these funds into my practice and knowing I have the exhibition to work towards in 2015 is so exciting.”
Jenkins won the award for Bed Head, a mixed-medium work using gloss and acrylic paint on plastic sheeting. Currently on show at the Mall Galleries, London alongside 58 other paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints selected for the 2014 exhibition, the work was one of over 3,600 entries submitted by artists.
This year’s judging panel comprised Nancy Durrant, art critic at The Times, Kevin Francis Gray, sculptor, Whitney Hintz, curator of the Hiscox Collection, and John Martin, director of John Martin Gallery. Commenting on the judging process, Hintz said: “There was a wide range of submissions but this year’s Threadneedle Art Prize winner stood out immediately.
“Tina Jenkins’ Bed Head was one of the first works we saw on judging day and, after viewing over 3,600 submissions, it was the first work that we returned to. Her bold approach to the human form and her clever use of material impressed the judges. I look forward to seeing more of Tina’s work in the future.”
Jenkins’ solo show will take place at the Mall Galleries from 30 March to 11 April 2015. Lewis McNaught, director of Mall Galleries, said: “The striking nature of her imagery delivers an extraordinary visual impact and will make a strong impression on visitors to her solo exhibition.”
The Threadneedle Art Prize exhibition continues at the Mall Galleries, London until 11 October 2014. www.threadneedleprize.com
