Venice Biennale 2017: full list of artists announced for Viva Arte Viva

The full list of the 120 artists featured in the 2017 Venice Biennale international exhibition, ‘Viva Arte Viva’, has been announced.

The show, curated by Christine Macel, features artists from 51 countries. There are eight UK-based artists in the exhibition, including: Karla Black (Glasgow), Rasheed Araeen (London), David Medalla (London), Francis Upritchard (London) and Cerith Wyn Evans (London).

Macel has stated that this year’s biennale is “a biennale designed with artists, by artists and for artists”, adding: “The role, the voice, and the responsibility of the artist are more crucial than ever before within the framework of contemporary debates. It is in and through these individual initiatives that the world of tomorrow takes shape, which though surely uncertain, is often best intuited by artists than others.”

This year’s biennale will feature 85 national pavilions with four countries participating for the first time: Antigua and Barbuda, Kiribati, Nigeria, and Kazakhstan.
