The three winners of the inaugural Jerwood/Photoworks Awards have been announced.
Matthew Finn, Joanna Piotrowska and Tereza Zelenkova will each receive £5,000 to develop ideas that represent ‘new approaches to photography’, culminating in a group exhibition at Jerwood Space, London. The work will then tour nationally.
In a joint statement Celia Davies, director of Photoworks, and Shonagh Manson, director of Jerwood Charitable Foundation, said: “There has been a huge response to the Jerwood/Photoworks Awards national open call.
“Central to the selection panel’s decision-making were the strength of each proposal and the potential direction of travel that each photographer might take.”
The competition received over 400 applicants who were then judged by the 2015 selection panel: Celia Davies, Shonagh Manson, artists Broomberg & Chanarin, and Lucy Moore, director at Claire de Rouen Books.
Davies and Manson added: “Each winner has been chosen for the richness of their ideas and their approach to developing and making important new work that would otherwise not happen. The dynamic between the works will be compelling to discuss over the coming year.”
