Deborah Last: Artist Deborah works directly from life and from memory to create light-filled work related to the landscape and the connections we make with it as humans. Her contemporary style, expressive colour, and intriguing mark-making blend with a traditional form of art to create unique and beautiful paintings. She works with a variety of materials and often mixed media. Deborah researches the landscape through a plein air practice, capturing the light and weather of the changing seasons. She completed an en plein air project to paint the landscape outside and from life for every day of 2022. She grew up in Kent's countryside, lived for seven years in India, and lived in the grounds of Stowe Landscape Gardens, the breathtaking landscape of North Devon. She now lives in rural West Oxfordshire, in the Cotswolds. The landscape has been her enduring inspiration, informing her work and practice. She graduated in 1987 with a BA hons Ceramics & 3D design at Leicester Polytechnic where she learned to have a potter’s attitude to creativity. She returned to further education in 2017 and graduated with an MA in contemporary Art Practice from Plymouth University. Her practice explores the connections we make as humans to the natural world and how this is affected by faith and beliefs. The work she is currently exploring is a painting practice that is rooted in storytelling and parables. Much of the work is being produced as three-dimensional painting objects.
