I create decorative ceramic tiles inspired by the beauty of nature. Being outdoors helps to calm the mind, body and spirit, its just wonderful chemistry. I usually end up watching birds, they are so territorial and unpleasant to each other yet very intelligent and beautiful, a complete contrast to the calmness I feel in nature. In my work I try to capture the objects, textures and patterns I see around me. I didn’t train as a ceramic artist, I actually did my degree in multimedia design. I have always however, enjoyed exploring new technologies and learning new skills. Clay genuinely fascinates me, its a labour of love and rewarding when it goes to plan. All of my tile ideas start life as a sketch, I then spend a significant amount of time developing these sketches into a template. I press mould the template onto hand rolled clay slabs before firing in a kiln. Glass is used to finish all of the large tiles as I love the depth of colour. The outcome is always a little unpredictable and could go wrong but it’s all part of the process, crossing your fingers and hoping the kiln gods are ever in your favour. As well as decorative tiles I delved into the world of jewellery, I have a range of glass and lace printed jewellery. When I first moved to Nottingham and started learning about the lace industry and I really wanted this to be part of my process. For my day job I work as a teacher, I love my job as I get to experiment with photography, painting, print, sculpture and much more as a living. I hope you enjoy my website and if you have any questions please do get in touch. Beeston, Nottingham, UK
