Rhiannon Grostate
I'm in my third year of painting and drawing at West Wales School of the Arts.
My current paintings for my final show will examine the changing cultures around maternity and motherhood. My concept begins in British India sixty years ago where our children were raised by Ayahs and maternal instincts were abandoned by their mothers. It culminates with western ideas from early images of Madonna and child to 'Yummy Mummies' in popular culture and Media. My paintings challenge historical depictions of maternity and tell truths about the standards and expectations our culture has come to demand of motherhood and raising children. How have things changed and what are the truths of our history.
