Through interviews with employers and commissioners, this study sets out typical fees paid to artists for public projects during 2004. Report demonstrates that in 2004, on-the-ground practice in rates of pay for artists varied considerably, despite recommended minimum rates by Arts Council England and Scottish Artists Union. Although now historical, payment of artists is still very much a ‘live’ issue, and an area of campaigning by a-n. Useful to researchers, artists, public-sector employers and commissioners since it highlights important principles and provides professional comparator pay rates.
