The final installment of the imaginatively titled ‘Thoresby Street Thursdays’ (A series of fortnightly exhibitions)
All that and a bag of chips. The exhibition unfolds intrepidly, a sweet balance of cleanness and complexity. Sangster’s ‘NAVY’ sucks you in, like a swiveling spider in a slippery basin. The fragrance consisting of ingredients you might relate to mouthwash, Maximuscle Promax or crystal meth, the apparatus suiting an ultra sterilised space soldier. The spinning substance; hypnotic, familiar yet foreign. The ordinariness of the navy plinth; frustratingly chic.
A super customised plinth displays several bottles of ‘Second Edition Riptide Rush Gatorade Frost’, the collaborative ‘RIPTIDE RUSH’ is subtly participatory as the display diminishes over the course of the private view, anticipating a mass adrenalisation. The branding of the American energy drink is ridiculous, the lilac liquid tastes like acetylsalicylic acid and potentially boosted testosterone levels of several of the evening’s attendees. The symbolic orange of the cap is echoed throughout the space along with indiscernible substances, delicate aromas and soft gyrations.
Hattrick’s recent commission for Trade gallery was reiterated in ‘UNTITLED (3 Parts)’ a close inspection of the contoured carbon fibre echoed the tiled patten of Hattrick’s epic buffalo horn floor, the orange fabric reflects on the white wall like a toxic spillage, residual seeping, or methodical flood. The castings if isolated might not reference anything in particular, but within the context of the exhibition, they become a clammy deltoid or a perspiring rectus abdominis.
The accompanying document dips into subjects such as Michael Jordan’s shorts length, the loss of youth, rhythm, repetition and reproduction. Sangster and Hattrick’s independent and collaborative endeavors sit poetically in the industrial gallery, as a whole it is quietly confident, obsessive and sentimental. A radical challenge; accompanied by an entertaining and educative text. A must for anyone into art, design or the 1990’s.
