“Transparent Deity” by Thomas Smith is a most curious and intriguing canvas in which a donnish maths professor, probably Tom himself, appears to have got caught in a gravitational tensor wearing hi-fi headphones overloaded with stellar music. Aptly, this large oil on canvas dominates one wall of what once was a theological library. Falling whilst sleeping or dreaming has been a continuous subject in his figurative work and can be seen also at http://www.vitreous.biz/gallery/solo/solo_thomassmith.php. His ‘Budgie Up’ study features another colourful form of suspended animation in a blue tropical mood.
In this a very varied display, there are several small edition linocuts by Angie Lewin, whose work has been inspired by the Cairngorms. Jeremy King, who arrived in Port Issac in the mid-seventies and now lives in St Ives, paints mainly on location, from his original work a number of images are constructed from this practice, evolving from representational to geometric. His work in this collection features the abstract ‘Aubergine’ and 'Penzance Dock'
There is also some fine pieces of pottery on display including a lovely ceramic bowl by Helen Jay
