The Periwinkle Shelter Installation
created by Rebecca and Mark Haden Ford (Two Circles Design)
The inspiration for this sculpture derives from the archaeological excavations during the creation of RSPB Medmerry as a one of the largest coastal managed realignment and flood protection schemes of its time.
Evidence was discovered of several circular Bronze Age roundhouses, burial grounds (dating from 1100 BC) and the remains of a medieval v-shaped 160m long wooden ‘kettle’ to funnel and trap fish in a weir at low tide using wickerwork fences. Littorina shells (periwinkles) were found in the remains of an ancient willow fish basket
Willow weaving is an ancient craft and Two Circles Design has been creating woven willow sculpture for over 20 years. Willow is not only sustainable, supporting many species of insect and wildlife it is also extraordinarily beautiful in its range of colours. Two Circles Design coppice over 10,000 rods of willow each year from local sources and use Musgrove willows in Somerset, a family run business for other willow projects.
Commissioned by Culture Spark as part of the CREATIVE COMMISSIONS at RSPB Medmerry.
