‘Pick of the Trail’ formed a showcase for a selection of artists who took part in Southbank Bristol Arts (SBA) Arts Trail 2006.
The SBA has 200 members made up of artists, makers and performers with wide-ranging disciplines as well as others interested in the arts. They organise an annual arts trail that takes place in May. The SBA is now taking a more active role in developing and supporting creativity within the South Bristol area. ‘Pick of the Trail’ shows the broad scope of artist members of the SBA, and provided an opportunity for some of the artists to show new work.
From painting to jewellery and ceramics to artist’s books this exhibition explores the diversity of art in South Bristol.
Tony Eastman’s ‘Shoes for a dancing robot’, made from Olive oil tins, brass, wood and leather, are an example of humour within art.The ‘shoes’ are lined with leather as if to be worn- if your feet were small enough to fit inside. The ‘Shoes for a dancing robot’ come with their own shoebox stating that ‘one size fits all’. The title itself evokes comic imagery, making the audience consider the awkwardness and noise of a dancing robot.
Emily Ketteringham’s screen print of ‘Southernhay, Bristol’ depicts a Bristol street in a graphic illustrative style. She shows particular attention to the brightly coloured bold exteriors that can be seen in many of Bristol’s terraced residential streets, creating a rainbow of colour.
At the private view Bristol based artist Lucy Axon invited guests to participate in ‘tell me about’. Participants were invited to fill out a badge outlining something they wanted to find out about and wear it for the duration of the evening. They then used this to engage in conversation with people they may otherwise not have talked to. This enhanced the social aspect of the evening and was the impetus for many interesting and bizarre conversations. Documentation of ‘tell me about’ will remain at the gallery for the duration of the exhibition.
The Grant Bradley Gallery provided a relaxed, social exhibition space, in the building that was previously Bedminster library, that well suited the work on offer.
