Over the last decade, Scribble has worked with some of the biggest names in art and culture across the North West and Yorkshire. So we were delighted to attend the opening night of Select, an exhibition at Marburae Gallery in Macclesfield. Select brings together contemporary visual artists from the North and South of England as well as from Europe. The Marburae Gallery sits snugly within Shackleford Pianos. This two-storey building is a gem of a place to wander round whilst admiring and pondering an array of eclectic pieces and prints.
Scribble was happy to spend sometime with one of our favourite London artists, Claire McDermott MRBS. McDermott was showcasing her sculpture Identity GM 1, which is inspired by spent flowers. She has cleverly captured the intricacies of the flower in metal to represent where one life ends and another one begins. Her art derives from microscopic studies on plant anatomy and is the inspiration for works ranging from drawing, painting and sculpture as a form of expression of thoughts. ‘I’ve wanted to exhibit my work in the North West for sometime. So it’s fantastic to be part of this exhibition and to bring my work to a new audience.’ said Claire.
Other works that caught Scribble’s eye were photographs of American scenes by Jo Mair. The images were a sentimental collection of daily life across North America. It was great to see a photographs of a shop front taken near Gastown in Vancouver, Canada; Scribble’s old stomping ground.
The entrance to the gallery was lined with some soul piercing images from artist Hannah Wooll who through her work pays homage to the depiction of women within art history. A performance by artist Simon Woolham in the foyer of the gallery saw everyone stop to listen to him reading from his memoies about growing up in Wythenshawe, Manchester. Woolham was surrounded by his work using biro drawings, and his paper interventions.
