Art Party Review by Carol Parker ‘Art on the High Street’ and member of Lincs Artist Forum

Being awarded the bursary to attend the Art Party Conference, was a great opportunity for a group of Lincolnshire artists to broaden their networks by talking directly to artists creating innovative and inspirational work elsewhere in the country. It’s really important for artists working in rural areas to be able to attend these kind of large events….we need to keep putting ourselves on the map!

When we arrived at the Spa, a fantastic building and such a great venue for the conference, we were led through room after room of stands, interventions and happy smiling artists until we reached our stand. We were a little disappointed that we were such a long way from main hall, but were just really happy to be there. We had taken the time to plan our intervention so that it contained all the information about our work, using maquettes, peep show and hand written boards……we then took it in turns to wander, explore and soak up the Conference energy.

We spoke to so many people but Blueprint from Cornwall were particularly memorable as an organic group of artists similar to LAF. They were brimming over with enthusiasm and passion; we will definitely keep in touch.

Best thing for me about the conference was listening to Jeremy Deller who was very uplifting. He immediately connected to his huge audience with his relaxed non arty jargon and fun style. He’s succeeded as an artist outside of the usual arts school route and admits to not being able to paint and I like that!

Unfortunately we were unable to tweet live due to poor signal, but on our return we will put images and information on the LAF facebook page and share our experience with other LAF members. More detail on the programme with individual stand holders name and location would have been useful.

Thank you for providing artists with a platform to shout loudly and be heard. Let’s hope this isn’t the last Art Party Conference but the first of many.
