A selection of recommended shows, including: an exploration of gender identity at the Hayward Gallery, London; a group drawing exhibition at Glynn Vivian, Swansea; plus six artists capturing unsettling moments of change at g39 in Cardiff.

Selected by artists Rana Begum, Sonia Boyce and Ben Rivers, the open submission exhibition will launch at Leeds Art Gallery in September before moving to South London Gallery.

South London Gallery’s new annexe in the former Peckham Road Fire Station, originally built in 1867 and London’s oldest surviving purpose built station, doubles the gallery’s exhibition space and will also house its Post-Graduate Residency programme.

This week’s selection of must-see shows includes: last week of Brazilian artist Luiz Zerbini at South London Gallery; movement explored through the gymnastic body with Jo Longhurst in Perth; Liverpool Biennial Associate Artists at Baltic 39; and Evan Ifekoya’s ‘queer black algorithm’ at Gasworks, London.

Taking place over the next three years, the new project will include series of public art commissions and an education programme as artists create artworks with and for South London Gallery’s neighbours on the Elmington, Pelican and Sceaux Gardens housing estates.

With £700,000 still to raise, work has begun to convert the former Peckham Road Fire Station into a mixed-use cultural centre incorporating exhibition, learning and meeting spaces, plus an artist’s studio.

Arts organisations including South London Gallery and Cell Studios are among those to receive a share of a new £20m fund, which is tackling a shortage of affordable creative workspaces in the capital. Arts Professional’s Liz Hill reports.
